DISPLAY OF BLOOMS
RONGOTEA BULB SHOW. (From Our Own Correspondent,) RONGOTEA, Sept. 16. The annual bulb "show of the Rongotea and District Horticultural Society was held on Saturday in splendid weather conditions, the day being warm and sunny. There was a large attendance throughout the afternoon and evening. Entries were fewer than usual, the extraordinarily mild conditions during recent months having advanced the flowering season for bulbs by at least a fortnight. Several local growers who were present stated that their daffodils were nvei, while others had only a small number left to display. Much of the decorative work was excellent, while the cooking and knitting sections were unusually large. The secretary^.(Mrs W. A. Churchill) had made extensive preparations with a result that things went very smoothly. Tho judges were:—Daffodils and cut flowers, Mrs A. J. Shaffer; decorative, Mrs J. G. Weightman; cooking, Mr J. G. Weightman. Stewards: Advanced section, Messrs J. F. Thompson, E. Gust and M. Lind; amateur section, Mesdames Gordon and Fioldhouse; miscellaneous, Mrs McKay and Miss Fioldhouse; decorative, Miss Pedley; luncheon, Mesdames Pedley, Yarrall and A. BurgesS; afternoon loa, Mesdames Bower and R. Brown; produce, Airs 11. Fox. Tho president (Mrs M. Will) welcomed those who had come from a distance, and thanked tho exhibitors and all who had worked in the interests of tho society. Although the entries were not as numerous as in past years, Mrs Will expressed herself as well satisfied considering the restrictions and difficult times in which we, were living. She then called on Hon. J. G. Gobbe to open the show. Afr Cobbo made some very complimentary remarks on the skill of thoso who raised such wonderful flowers. Ho had spent some time in going round the benches, and while ho had seen a greater number on display at Rongotea, he had never in any show seen finer individual blooms; many of them were a distinct advance on thoso of previous years, and he was much impressed by their excellent quality. Among those present were two foundation members of the society, Alessrs J. Gloyn and J. Glover. In spite of their advanced years both took a keen interest in the proceedings. Tho following are the awards: Champion bloom in show, Air J. C. Glover’s “Seraglio,” a fine quality, round bloom, well coloured; best bloom amateur classes, Airs C. R.
