LONGBURN.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) LONGBURN, Sept. 12 A ball was held in Mr J. Callcsen’s granary at Karcre, the proceeds of which are to go towards soldiers’ Christmas parcels. The' function was an outstanding success, there being a very large crowd present. The hall had been tastefully decorated with flags and masses of pink camellias by Mrs Ca'ilcscn and friends. The music was supplied by a professional orchestra, extras being played by Miss P. Voss and Mr I. Fraser. Recitations wore given by Corporal Page, of the Air Force Station, Ohakca. Novelty dances were won by Mr and Mrs G. Davcy and Mr J. Wass and partner. Supper was served by Mrs Callcsen and ladies of the committee. At the September meeting of the Women’s Institute Mrs Fletcher presided. Miss N. Murray was welcomed as a visitor. Mrs Pierard was welcomed back after her severo illness. Arrangements were discussed for members to attend the Patriotic shop, riiany being willing to take part. Two demonstrations were given and were much appreciated—by Mrs Stephenson on smocking and by Mrs W. Fletcher on niched cushions. The monthly competitions were judged by Mrs Cruden and Miss Murray. and resulted: —Plate of savouries, Mrs C. Nicol 1 and 2, Mrs T. Rowland 3; novelties, Mrs Chamberlain 1 and 2, Mrs Hills 3; bloom, Mrs Chamberlain 1, Mrs Nieol 2, Mrs Murray 3. Mr J. Calleson is visiting Hamilton. Lieutenant and Mrs Henrico, of Miramar, are the guests of Mrs Pierard. Mrs Kate, of Stratford, is visiting Mrs Young. Miss M. Hammond, of. Featherston, is staying with ,Mr and Mrs C. E. Bee. Mr and Mrs Atkinson, cf Auckland, are visiting •Mr and Mrs C. C. Hills, “Hitlcote.” The winners of the recent flag 500 were Mr and Mrs B. Cookslcy, Mr B. Pratt and Mr Francis. The aggregate prizes were awarded to Mrs Lover and Mr V. Rankin.
