COLYTON.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) COLYTON. Sept. 13. A very representative gathering filled the hall on Tuesday evening, the occasion being the eighth birthday of the Women’s Institute. The celebrations were in the customary form of a social and dance. The audience were entertained by visiting and local artists, the programme commencing with a pianoforte duet by the Misses P. and D. Parker, this item being enthusiastically encored, as was Miss A. Candy' in elocutionary numbers. A song and. dance by the school children proved popular, as did Mr Noel Shortali’s _ vocal solos. A Dutch dance by the Misses P. and V. Sbortal! won applause, play by members of the Makino Institute proved most entertaining. 'The president (Mrs IT. Beatson) expressed thanks to the gathering for the support, which was ample reward for the efforts of members in organising the eelebrations. The president called on Mrs Baker, of the Makino Institute, to light the candles of the birthday cake, while Mrs B. McLeod, representing the Waiata Institute, extinguished the symbols of eight very successful years of the institute’s life. Mrs Sporle, on behalf of the Oroua Federation. cut the cake, which afterwards sold readily at threepence a piece. The supper-room presented a festive appearance, with (he tables adorned with- howls of spring flowers and foliage. Dancing' to music provided by a professional orchestra continued into the early hours, Messrs R. ,'Short all and L. Thurston being M.G.’s.
