EMERGENCY CORPS.

PLANS IN HOItOWHENUA

Ail indication of the lines on which the Emergency Reserve Corps might he developed in the Horowhenua area was given by the chairman (Cr. G. A. Monk) .at a meeting of the Horowhenua County Council yesterday. A circular was received from the Minister of National Service (Hon. It. Semple) setting out details of the formation of the corps, and copies of the regulations dealing with this corps and with emergency precautions. The chairman reported that a meeting of local bodies in the Palmerston North area had been held the day before. A further meeting would have to be held for the purpose of sub-dividing the area. It was the desire of the council to help in every possible wav with the formation of the corps. He visualised that there would be three main centres in the council’s district —at Shannon, Levin and Otaki —and in them the council could co-operate with existing local bodies, 6uch as borough councils. Smaller centres would also have toi be organised, such at Waikanae, Te Horo, Ohau and others. Then it would be for the committees in those areas to function in co-opera-tion with the local bodies. The responsibility of the organising work in its area would, however, definitely be the council’s. The chairman, Cr. A. M. Colquhoun, the clerk (Mr F. H. Hudson) and the engineer (Mr J. T. M. Brewster) were given authority to attend any further meetings held in connection with the scheme in the main area.
