RONGOTEA’S GOOD RESPONSE

Further donations to the Zone E Provincial Patriotic Fund were received yesterday, chiefly from the. Ohingaiti and Mangaweka areas, and the increasing interest being taken, in the establishment of. a largo fund to provide for the soldiers, sailors and airmen when they return from overseas service is most encouraging and indicates that the zone will not be lacking in its contributions to the laudable effort. Donations arc:—Already ack-. nowledged, £1440 3s 6d; Ohingaiti district committee, £67 18s; Mangaweka district committee, £l4 2s; A.D. (monthly amount), £1; total to date, £1523 3s 6d. , , At Rongotea Ihe appeal for funds has been responded to very liberally, and tjie committee responsible for the organisation of the war effort has been working at top speed to provide contributions worthy of the district which gave willingly not only of its splendid youth in the Great War but also large sums of money. A glimpse at the roll of honour on the Soldiers’ Memorial in the square there shows conclusively that many of the district’s sons played their part in the 1914-18 war with Germany Many of them made the supreme sacrifice. The honour of Rongotea’s heroes stands high, and the present war effort reveals that the patriotic spirit manilest 25 years ago persists, and indeed enthusiasm has increased. Rongotea has supplied men for the Navy, Army and the Air Force since the present conflict began, and those men have the knowledge that their efforts are appreciated and that those at home are making preparations for their eventual home-coming. Over £32 from Rongotea icachcd Zone.E headquarters in Feilding yesterday to swell the provincial fund to the splendid total of over £ISOO to dale.

Additional donations to the fund are as follow: —Per Rongotea Patriotic SubGommittee: Children’s garden parly, £l7 8s 4d; entertainment committee, £lO 10s; Methodist .Church concert, £2 10s; children’s garden party, £1 15s; Miss S. Ilancox’s raffle, £7 2s; Miss E. Simpson, £2 2s; Mr and Mrs W. Hair (minesweepers’ comforts), £5. CHRISTMAS PARCELS.

The Feilding Patriotic Society's difficulty in obtaining lib tins for use in baking Christmas cakes for despatch to soldiers overseas has been removed by the Glaxo Laboratories (Now Zealand), Ltd., having offered to supply them. AlcCorkindale, of the Ladies’ Patriotic Committee, yesterday, the work of making up 259 Christmas parcels for soldiers was handled efficiently at the Borough Council Chambers by the ladies, who worked long hours in completing the task of providing Zone E’s quota of 600 parcels. The cash receipts for the Christmas parcels fund amounted to over £SOO while a large sum was represented in the goods donated.
