OPIKI FLOWER SHOW

(From Our Own Correspondent.) OPIKI, Sept. 13. Tho garden circle on Wednesday held its annual spring daffodil show in the ball. A record number of entries were received in the bulb section and all were of a very high standard. The display of cut flowers was of a wide variety and particularly impressive; the cooking section was Well contested and the preserves and soldiers’ knitting . classes were of high standard. There was a good attendance of patrons. A display by Mr G. Larsen, of Opild, who was the judge for the bulbs, attracted much attention, Mr Larsen said that tho season this year had been particularly favourable and some exceptional ; blooms had been grown. The judges for , tho other sections were Mrs A. J. Will (Rongotea), Mrs Buchanan (Tiakitahuna) I and Mrs Brookfield (Palmerston North). The stewards were Mcsdames Larsen, ' Robinson and Miss Larsen (bulbs), Mes--1 dames Cooksley and 'Graham Smith (miscellaneous), Mrs and Miss B. Jackson , (decorative), Mcsdames Sanies and Percy (home industries), Mrs S. Claridge (soli diers’ knitting) and Mrs Irwin (child- | roll's classes). Mrs J. Mabey was in charge of a competition for a cake made and donated by Mrs Aitchison. Mrs G. J. Wilde, leader of the garden circle, welcomed visitors, and tho hostesses were Mcsdames Wilson, Olsen, Henderson, White, Alve and Miss Wilson, who served afternoon tea to the visitors. The untiring efforts by the secretary (Mrs J. D. Aitchison), ably assisted by Mrs Norman, greatly contributed (o the success of the show. 'they. were greatly helped by the smooth working of the garden circle committee. Mr 11. Seifert, of Palmerston North, one of the oldest residents of the district, again kindly assisted by opening the show. .Opiki, she said, was one of the foremost districts in the growing of beautiful exhibition bulbs, as was shown here, for every champion bulb was grown in Opiki. The popularity ol’ the show was proved by the large number of individual exhibitors, some of whom, though they had only one entry brought it along and in some cases won their class. The children’s classes were notable for the large number of entries ami high standard of work. In the evening, Mrs Wilde called upon the president of the institute (Mrs Irwin) to present the trophies. Mrs Wilde thanked all who had helped to make the show such . a success. Dancing was continued until a iiue hour, the music being played by Mr An derson. A cake made and donated by Mrs Aitchison to the garden circle was iced by Messrs Boniface Bros., of Palmcrslun North.
