DRAINAGE WORK.
NO GRANT BY COUNCIL
Tho recommendation of the -works committee, that no grant be made for proposed drainage work about which a deputation from the Buckley Drainage Board recently made representations, was adopted at a meeting of the Horowlienua County Council j-ester-day. This led to a discussion on the question whether such action might hinder production. Or. A. M. Colquhou.n, chairman of tlie works committee, said that if the work were carried out it would not be beneficial in all respects. The undertaking would bs inclined to make water “jiond up” in the area. It was not the intention or desire of the council to interfere with the drainage scheme at the expense of production, but the council must look at the position from the point of view of protecting its road. If the drain were constructed independently of the council, the position would have to be watched, as water would definitely “pond up.” The chairman (Cr. G. A. Monk) : What you object fo is creating a bank as a result of the deepening and widening of the drain. Cr. A. J. Gimblett asked if the committee had considered the position from the point of view of some provision being made for the disposal in another manner of the spoil resulting from the widening and deepening work which had been proposed. The Drainage Board, he said, might have some other method in view of disposing of tho spoil, by making a l>ank which would not retard.the water. Cr. F. J. Ryder: I understand that the spoil would build a bank.. The chairman: I am quite definite on that point. The recommendation "of the works committee was adopted.
