TERRIFIC EXPLOSION.
U.S, POWDER FACTORY
FELT 20 MILES AWAY
Received September 13, 1.45 p.m. KENVIL (New Jersey), Sept. 12. A terrific explosion shook the Hercules powder plant, as well as the immediate vicinity. Calls were sent out over a wide area for ambulances and first-aid squads. Every available fire engine was rushed to the plant. The explosion was felt twenty miles away. The Hercules plant is one of the biggest powder manufacturers in the United States. The firm has a number of plants, of which Kenvil is one. The company manufactures powder and dynamite for -the Government. Many of the injured were sent to hospital.
A lateU message says it is estimated at least 50 were killed and 100 injured. The explosion did incalculable damage and will delay seventeen million dollars’ worth of British and American defence contracts. Thirty bodies have been recovered.
