DANNEVIRKE SHOWGROUNDS
OFFERED FOR CAAIP SITE
A representative meeting of the Dannevirke and District A. and P. Association decided, this week, to allow the Defence Department tlie use of the showground for a Territorial camp for approximately six weeks from the beginning of October. The camp will serve as a training centre till the main camp at Waiouru is ready for occupation. The secretary (Mr H. S. M. ,Quigley) explained that Captain Hi. A. Jones, district engineer and works officer for the Central Military District, and Captain W. A. Breach, DeputyAssistant Quartermaster-General, had made a thorough examination of the showgrounds during the week-end, and had expressed the opinion that the site was the most suitable they had seen, and that they' would have no hesitation in recommending it to the Government. If tlie camp did eventuate it was expected that there would be approximately 1000 men in the camp during the whole of October. The co-operation of the farmers in the district would be sought in allowing some of their properties to be used as training grounds. A motion, “That the association allow the military authorities the use of the showgrounds for the Territorial camp,” was carried unanimously.
