HARRIER RACE.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —In connection .with the interclub race between the Y.M.C.A., Marton, and Feilding clubs on Saturday, tho course was 4i miles of cross country and road. On Saturday morning three of the local runners went round the course, placed flags bn posts, and dropped paper for most of the way, which could be seen from the main road, as the trail led up hills and over paddocks. On Monday we read that the course was poorly marked, which is incorerct, and that D. McCardle lost the trail, which is also incorrect. McCardl© was never any more than fifty yards ahead of Hill, or Lambert on at any stage of the race, and they caught him on the main road, not in the paddocks ; therefore he never could have lost the trail. McCardle was beaten and needs no excuses made for him.—l am, etc., It. M. LAMBERTON, Captain, Feilding Harrier Club.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —The report of the harrier race in Monday’s issue of your paper is correct, and I should like to point out to “Fair Play” that MeCardle of the Palmerston North Club did lose the trail, more than once long before the Halcombe ltoad was reached. Hill and Lamberton were a long way behind when he first/missed the trail, so 1 would hive to know how “Fair Play” knew he did not do so. After the race McQvrdle was asked if he missed the trail and he said he had, so I do not see how “Fair Play” can contradict this report. “Fair Play’s” remark about MeCardle being well beaten into third place is in itself incorrect, as only eight seconds separated the first three to finish.—l am, etc., N. HEARSEY. Palmerston North, 11-9-40.
