RUGBY FOOTBALL
ST. PATRICK’S CLUB
SOCIAL GATHERING
There was a large attendance of members and supporters ol St. Patrick s Rugby Football Club at the club s annual dinner, held in the P.D.C. tearooms last evening. The president (Mr J. O’Sullivan) was in the chair. In proposing the toast of the club, Brother Tarcisius, director of the A lariat: Brothers’ liigh School, said the schoo' had every reason to be grate!ul to the club. While the club teams had not obtained the success they desired, they had played very creditable games. The speaker mentioned that Monsignor MacManus was making efforts to secure an additional playground at the school and it was hoped to build a gymnasium there. This would be an ideal place in which to train, as well as providing a meeting-room, l'ather Jansen also .had in mind the establishment of a swimming club which he hoped the football club would warmly support. The performance of the'filth grade team, which came near to winning the competition in its class, was largely due to the efforts of Brother Bernard, Father Jansen and Mr M. Kilpatrick. The opinion that club football in the Manawatu compared favourably with that in other districts >vas expressed by Mr O’Sullivan, in reply. Ho stated that 18 of the St. Patrick s Club members were on active service and 10 others were waiting to go into camp. The club teams had played for the game’s sake, and in that light the season had been most successful, for its first year the filth grade team had done particularly well; of 10 matches played it had won six, drawn one and lost three. It had gained 13 points against the leading team’s 16. The toast of the Manawatu Rugby Union was proposed by Mr W. Powell, captain of the senior team, and replied to by Mr R. Gillespie, who extended congratulations to the club on its high standard of sportsmanship. He mentioned that the Marist Brothers’ primary school team in the two years of its existence must have created a world’s record—it had scored 450 points in 17 games, only 15 points being scored against it. MEMBERS IN FORCES.
Emphasis on the point that winning competitions was of secondary importance to good fellowship was laid by the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) in proposing the toast of club members on active service. The club was proud of those members playing their part in the war, which was caused through lack of team spirit among the nations. Mr Mansford paid a tribute to Brother Tarcisius, stating that the city was fortunate in having an educationist of his calibre in its midst. He concluded by wishing the club every success. Other toasts honoured were: Kindred clubs, proposed by Mr F. Aisher and replied to by Messrs AY. Carruthers (United) and F. Edmonds (Kia Toa) ; referees, Mr M. Kilpatrick ; officers and coaches, Air J. Delaney—Air J. Hebberley; entertainers, Air J. O’Connell.
