The by-election for the Croydon seat in the New South Wales Assembly due to the resignation of the former Premier (Mr 15. S. 13. Stevens) to contest a Federal seat resulted in the Government candidate (Mr D. Hunter) having a comfortable victory by over 2000 votes over the official Labour nominee (Mr G- Weir). Ministers of religion and theological students are to be automatically exempted from the conscription issue mn the application of the head of ™ ie church, although their names will be included in the ballot, according to. advice contained in a letter from the Primate of New Zealand (Archbishop West-Watsop) to liev. Leslie B. Nea.e (President of the Methodist Church ol New Zealand).
