FARMING NEWS.

i RURAL RAKLNGS.

Otago’s War Effort. A feature of the rural war effort in Otago will be the endeavour of arable farmers to substantially increase the acreages of wheat and oats in th? province. Under the general increased production plan farmers will be asked to raise last year’s 6000 acres of threshed wheat to at least 11.000 acres this year. Last year only about 1200 acres of oats were threshed, but this year it. is proposed to sow an acreage of at least 10.000 acres.

Australian Wool Cheque, .Judging by the shrinkage in the wool clip now coming in for appraisement, it is probable that this year’s Australian wool cheque will bo about £57,000,000, compared with nearly £65,000,000 last year. Sale of Dairy Herds.

Cancellation of sales of Vlaiiry herds arranged to take place in Southland is accepted there as an effect of the Dairy Supply Control Order, 1940, which came into force on August 19. The order is aimed at securing additional production of cheese this season with a view to supplying increased quantities to Britain, under the new agreement.
