NOTES.

The contention that a farmer was payins national security and social security tax nine months ahead of most other taxpayers was made by a member at the recent meeting of the Southern Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Union dairy committee. ’I he farmer was paying natipnal security lax on last year’s income, whereas the tax was not supposed to be effective till July .22. The same applied to anyone who could not calculate his income from week to week. Social security tax was similarly affected. Mr Ross moved that the Government be asked to amend legislation to correct this. The chairman (Mr G. A. Cammock) seconded the motion, and it was carried unanimously. It will be sent forward to Wellington at once, but it will also be discussed at the next Farmers Union meeting,' • The Hawke’s Bay Acclimatisation Society has allotted 20,000 brown trout fry to the Woodville and Southern Ilawkels Bay/districts'. A Danish resident living, in the Hopelands district, Miss Plon, recently completed a finely worked doll’s outfit complete with basinotte, and has offered this to lie raffled for Red Cross funds. The basinette was made of fine cane wood to Miss Pi oil’s instructions at the Blind Institute, Auckland, and has a folding hood. The bedclothes have all been worked .by hand and are a great tribute to their designer. The sleeping doll which is clothed in finely knitted apparel is also a tribute to such a dainty sewer. The bedclothes themselves are made of fine Danish linen and hand-worked. Miss Plen, who came from Denmark 'only a few years ago,has received much praise for other specimens of her handiwork, and her patriotic action is much appreciated.
