Batchelar and P. V. Koehler- . .. . • . ■. - It was decided that settlers on; Iking Melford Road be interviewed with a view to land being taken over to inake a 66ft wide read. It was decided to write to the Public Works Department advising it that the council is not satisfied with tjie work done on\ Ngaire (street, Longburn (which the department took over during the construction of the railway overbridge), and stating that tho council considers it is entitled to have the department carry oat a light remetalling of the road. Cr. Collis reported on the recent meeting of the District Highways Council. He said that no further application had been put .in by the County Council, in , accordance • with instructions, for new roads. The County Council’s allocation had been reduced by about £I2OO, as was to be expected. Mr S. A. Oxenham wrote expressing gratitude for the work carried out by the council on the part of Stoney Creek, in his property at Whakarongo. The Department of Labour, forwarded a circular asking that Scheme 13 workers who enlisted be paid at a reasonable amount of working time to enable therm to eniist at the nearest recruiting station, and also report tor any medical examination when required. —The letter was received. A resolution was passed confirming the striking of the general and hospital rates for the year, the. general rates being the same as last vear s and the hospital rate slightly lower. The council decided that it would sue for the recovery of outstanding rates unpaid after August 20. ' ' The Commissioner of Transport (Mr G. L. Laurenson) wrote saying that, in connection with the agreement recently concluded between the New Zealand Counties’ Association and the Transport Department he had arranged with the chief traffic inspector in the district to interview the,council at the earliest possible date and discuss traffic control i’ll the county. The agreement provided that prosecutions under the local body traffic by-laws were to be at tlie discretion of the County Council, and the chief traffic inspector would be glad to have, an indication from the council about what policy to adopt in this respect.—lt was lelt to the engineer (Air L. C. Pickering) to meet the chief traffic inspector. The Commissioner also forwarded advice of the Government’s decision to extend the rebate of half the fees on farmers’ trucks. The Palmerston North City Council forwarded a report on the proposed improvements to the Alangaone and Kawau Streams. The New Zealand County Council s Industrial Union of Fin ploy ers forwarded a copy of the New Zealand local bodies’ (rural section) labourers’ award. -—The engineer said that only slight increases in the wages had been made. The ranger reported that the number of stock found straying on county roads was 62. The financial statement showed that there was a credit balance at the bank in the county fund account of £2089 13s 3d; in - the Fitzherbert West water-race account, £6l 0s lOd; in the Linton Domain Board account, £154 13s 5d ; and in the heavy traffic fees account, £2427 15s 6d.
