STATE SUBSIDIES.

FOR COAL COMPANIES. Per Press Association. ' WELLINGTON, June 8. The Government has decided to subsidise the coal companies to prevent the increases in costs being passed on to consumers, said the Minister of Mines (Hon. P. C. Webb), in an interview. The Minister stated that the recent agreement ■ between the United Coal Miners’ Association and the Coal Mineowners’ Association provided for a slight increase in the rates to hewers, truckers, / and the lower-paid men. Many men working in mines did not average more than £4 a week. The companies considered the industry could not carry the whole of the additional charge and, realising the difficulty of passing on the exact amount of the increase to the community,, the Government thought the best way to stabilise prices was to subsidise the companies, as was being done in the case of fertilisers and wheat. -
