SEALED ROADS.

PAST YEAR’S OPERATIONS. DISTRICT’S GOOD RECORD. Representatives of county councils forming the No. 9 District Highways Council were given a review, at their annual meeting in Palmerston North, of the operations in the last /financial year within the council’s area, which extends from Wellington to the Manawatu, Kiwitea and Pohangina counties. It was pointed out that the proportion of paved or sealed roads to the total district mileage-of highways waslnow 54 per cent. This was a percentage exceeded by only one district in New Zealand (Taranaki). / The following statistics were given, showing the new classes of work carried out during the year, the figures for the previous financial year being given in brackets: New formation, nil (one mile 61 chains) ; widening and preparation work, .18 miles 72 chains (24 miles 59 chains); gravelling and metalling (new), nil (two miles nine chains); sealing or surface treatment (new), 19 miles nine chains (19 miles 12 chains) ; maintenance sealing completed, 17 miles nine chains (11 miles 5S chains)' bridges- built (lineal feet), 654 (3362),; engineering surveys completed, 15 miles 16 chains (19 miles 43 chains). The length of new scaling was made up as follows, the highway being stated

first/ the county or- borough second and the distance in miles and chains third: Wanganui-Levin, Manawatu County, 54 chainsGreatford-Ashliurst, Orotul County, 15 chains; Foxton-Shan-non Horowlienua County, 68 chains; Levm-Palmcrston North, Horowlienua County, two miles 60 chains; LevinPalmerston North, Kairanga County, seven miles six chains; Lower HuttEhstbourne, Eastbourne Borough, 2G chains; Foxton Beach, Foxton Borough, 11 chains; Foxton Beach, Mnnawatu County, 58 chains; JohnsonvijleNcwlnnds, johnsonville Town District, 16 chains; Jolinsonville-Ncwlands, Makartt County, two miles 60 chains; Khandnllah-Johnsonville, Johnsonville Town District, 62 chains; Upper HuttWaikanae, Hutt and Horowlienua counties, two miles 59 chains. /

During the year there were 4 miles 26 chains of roading declared main highways and 3 miles 18 chains of highway revoked. In this district the Whirok'ino deviation accounted for the revocation of a length of 1 mile 79 chains and the declaration of 1 mile 58 chains, and in East Street (Feilding) 70 chains of road were declared a highway and 60 chains revoked. As at'March 31, there were 504 miles 79 chains of main highway in this highways district —383 miles 31 chains of ordinary main highways, and 121 miles 48 chains of State highways. Of this total length, 271 miles 37 chains had paved or sealed surfaces and 233 miles 42 chains gravel or macadam surfaces.
