DETENTIONS IN BRITAIN. . Received June 7; 10.5 a.m. . RUGBY, June 6. The Home Secretary (Sir John Anderson) stated in the House of Commons that 515 persons had been detained up to Wednesday under Regulation 18b of tho Defence'Regulations, which were amended on May 22 enabling the Home Secretary to order the detention of members of organisations ■ which might be prejudicial to national security. Captain A. H. M. Ramsay, M.P., Sir Oswald Mosley and leading Fascists were arrested under this regulation. It is reported from Paris that five well-known members of Paris society, all extreme Right Wingers, have been arrested under the security laws. The semi-official Telefrance Agency, commenting on the arrests, says: “The. reconstitution of the Government and the arrest of a number of personalities known for tlioir attachment to a policy of compromise afford new proof of the country’s determination to pursue tlie war alongside the Allies to complete victory.” A Press Association message from Capetown states: General-Smuts, ill a speech, said the question of internal security was well in hand. “I have watched the Fifth Column for two years,” lie said. “I' tolerate differences of opinion, blit not disloyalty to our effort. There are a ’number of traitors wishing to undermine the cause for which we all stand. I will deal with them efficiently.” The six leading membeis of the Peace Pledge Union, including Professor Alexander Wood, a lecturer at Cambridge University, who appeared at Bow Street Court early last month, for alleged breaches of the Defence Regulations, were bound over after signing a resolution by the union withdrawing the posters and undertaking not to issue literature inciting disaffection. Tlie poster, which was worded “War ceases when men refuse to fight—What are you doing about it?” was issued two years ago.
