M.P. IN PRISON.

APPEAL UNHEEDED. Received June 6, 10.15 a.m. LONDON, June 5. The speaker of the House of Commons announced to-day that he h" 1 received a letter from Captain A. li. M. Ramsay, Conservative M.P. for Peebles, who on May 23, was taken to Brixton Prison. He had been arrested under Regulation 188. (The regulation says detention may be ordered on suspicion that a person is “of hostile origin or associations,, or has recently been concerned in acts prejudicial to the public safety or defence, or in preparation or instigation of such acts.”) The letter said: “I have been for nearly a fortnight under preventive arrest. This constitutes a grave violation of the privileges and vital rights of members. 1 beg you to convey this appeal to the House.” After reading the letter the Speaker paused, but no one rose, whereupon the House proceeded with the next business. UNTRUTH PUNISHED.

The first case of - the kind under the new Defence Regulations was heard at Mansfield, when Sidney Hawkins House, aged 50, was fined £lO for repeating that he allegedly heard “Lord Haw Haw” broadcast from Berlin relating to the occupation of Mansfield schools. The Ministry of Information confirmed that accused’s story regarding the broadcast was untrue.
