RECRUITING FOR THE ROYAL NAVY FOR WAR SERVICE OVERSEAS TWO SPECIAL SCHEMES THE Admiralty in England have asked New Zealand to recruit a limited -L number of men for temporary service for the duration of the war as OFFICERS in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. The service will be OVERSEAS with ships of the Imperial Naval Forces, and NOT IN New ZEALAND. There will be two distinct schemes of entry as shown below. SCHEME “A” Age: 30 to 40. These candidates will be commissioned as Probationary Temporary SubLieutenants, and be confirmed in rank after three 'months’ service. They can then be considered for promotion to tiie rank of Temporary Lieutenant ii recommended. CANDIDATES MUST HOLD AND PRODUCE FOR INSPECTION ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CERTIFICATES OR PRODUCE SATISFACTORY PROOF THAT THEY POSSESS EQUIVALENT KNOWLEDGE OF NAVIGATION New Zealand Certificate of Competency as Master of a Pleasure Yacht in New Zealand Waters, or (British) Board of Trade Yachtmasters (Coastal) Certificate. SCHEME “B Age: 20 to 25; 25 to 30. Preference will be given to men between 20 and 25. These candidates will be enrolled in the first instance as Ordinary Seamen with a view to promotion to officer s rank. After a course of preliminary training in. England they will serve at sea for three months and will then he considered for promotion to Probationary Temporary Sub-Lieutenant. 11 selected they will then undergo further training to fit them to be officers. If they pass the course, they will be grantee temporary commissions ' and thereafter serve under the ordinary regulations for officers of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. If they are not selected for a commission they must , serve for the remainder of the war as lower dewlt ratings. CANDIDATES MUST HAVE PASSED THE NEW. ZEALAND UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE EXAMINATION OR ITS EQUIVALENT. A knowledge of the sea is not essential but is an advantage. CONDITIONS APPLICABLE TO BOTH SCHEMES. Candidates must be in all respects physically fit, and must have perfect eyesight, including colour vision. All applicants who appear to fulfil the above qualifications will be required to appear before an Interviewing Committee of Naval Officers. Travelling Expenses to the place of interview will be refunded on application. Passage to England will be paid. PAY AND MARRIAGE ALLOWANCES. Pay will commence from the date of embarkation. Pay and Allowances will be at Royal Naval (imperial) rates, hut the New Zealand Government will supplement those rates, by payment in New Zealand to a relative or bank account (or in a lump sum on completion ot service), of the difference between the Royal Naval rate and the correspondino- (higher) New Zealand rate. • . & ' In the following table the Royal Naval rate and the supplementation rate are shown :—- lv.N.
