THE GREAT NORTHERNS.
’hurdles and steeples. TWO CONVINCING WINS. (By “Spectator.”) Streamline had a convincing win in the Great Northern Hurdles —lie went to the front when the field settled down and was never afterwards headed, winning hanclsomely and paying; double figures. • A'' return to his best form after not racing for nearly three years is a feature of Streamline’s career. He in owned by Mr J. H. Grigg, of Longhcaeh, Ashburton, and was trained and ridden by G. Ridgwuy. He is an aged brown gelding by Day Comet — Sailor’s Hope. A week before Nooturnus won ihc Grand National Steeplechase in 1937, Geek o’ the North. Nooturnus and Streamline finished in that order in the Homeby Steeplechase at the Christchurch Hunt meeting. .Streamline did not race after that till the present season, as he broke down. Earlier lie bad won the South Canterbury Steeplechase with 10.13 from Polvdora (10.11). He also won a steeplechase at Ashburton, but while he may not have come up to expectations over country his hurdle form was good. He ran third in the Crand National Hurdles in 1936 to Jolly Beggar (11.4) and Clarion Call (10.9), Before that he recorded a second, three successive wins and a third over hurdles. He won each day at the Easter meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club, carrying 10.10 over two miles on the second day. ,
Streamline opened Ills present season with an unsuccessful start at Waimatc. He came up to the Kgmont meeting at Hawera and beat Ivaiwaka by- half a length in the' Manawapou Hurdles Handicap. On the first day at the- recent Waikato meeting at Tc Rapa he was second by a length and a half to Jewelled Girdle, and oh the second day was a. fair fourth in the hurdle race, which Jewelled Girdle again won. Streamline is generally recognised as an impressive hurdler, and the two weeks extra work after his Te Rapa races was expected to make an improvement in him —an expectation which was fully realised. All Irish led throughout to win the Great Northern Steeplechase. With his second in the Hurdles on Saturday, after his Waikato Steeplechase win, added to. the fact that lie was coupled with Baldric, it wuis not surprising to find him made favourite for the race. All Irish is one of the most experienced performers over both hurdles and country in the Auckland province, and his performance at Te Rapa indicated that he had come right back to his best form. Three seasons ago All Irish won the A.R.C. Hunt Club Hurdle* and' Hunt Club Cup. and in the following season was successful in the Rakuranga Hunt Cup. A.R.C. Hunters’ Steeples, Avondale Hobsonville Hurdles, Waipa W. G. Park Steeples and W.R.C. July Steeples. Last season his form was not quite so good, hut he won the A.R.C. Winter Steeples. All Irish had his first start this season in the A.R.C. St. Hclier’s Hurdle* at Easter, in which he finished fourth. He next ran third in the Avondale Hobsonvil 1 o Hurdles and . 1 c Rapa Steeples, and won the Waikato Steeplechase on the second day. All Irish was bred in 1933 by Air C. Matthews and is by Illumination from Kiki. by Winkie from Kilrca. Illumination, was rdltfioiied lor some years at a stud in the Waikato, and it was there that lie left All Irish, lie has sired many good jumpers, including Erination, Mio Lume Lucidus.
