TWO WINS FOR OWNER.

OLD SURREY AND HUNTING LORE. SUCCESS OVER HURDLES. (By “Spectator.”) Although it was recognised that Mr L. IJ. Collinson had two good jumpers in Hunting Lore and Old Surrey, it seemed, for a-long while this season, that he was doomed not to ; win over hurdles with them. However, a welcome change in luck for this owner has occurred in recent weeks. Old Surrey won the Ilokowhitu Handicap on the flat at the Awapuni meeting lust month and gained his first hurdles success at Wanganui on Saturday last. Hunting Lore won over hurdles on Monday after losing his rider on Saturday. Old/Surrey has had in all two wins, fivo seconds, and two thirds in 17 starts this season and Hunting Lore has two wins, nine seconds and three thirds in 16 starts. Until the second day at' Awapuni, when he was fourth, Hunting Lore had not been out of a place this season. Sister to Wotan. Kriemhild, who had the easiest of wins in the Trial Handicap at Wanganui, is a sister to Wotan and a half-sister to Peter Jackson and Gaine Carrington. No Trip to Melbourne.. Padishah’s owner, Mr .J. A. ITennah, has decided that he will not take tho horse to Melbourne, where lie is entered in the Victorian Grand National Hurdles and Steeplechase. Foxton Club’s Taxation. The taxation paid in connection with the Foxton Racing Club’s recent winter meeting was as follows: —Amusement tax, £25 6s lOd; totalisator lax, £732 15s, dividend tax, £640 17s; stakes tax, £9 8s; making a total of £I4OB 6s lOd. Consistency Rewarded. Dark Eagle had his first win of the season in the Connolly Handicap, but he has been a consistent performer this season. He has had one first, four seconds and four thirds in 11 starts. In spite of this ho. was allowed to pay the best dividend of the day. In Open. Company.

There was support for Ruatiti when he made his first appearance in open company in the Connolly Handicap at Wanganui. With every advantage in weight he was made third favourite, but never threatened danger, although he finished on well from a real position. Wah Lap Unlucky.

War Lap was unlucky at Wanganui on Saturday in the Purua Hack Hurdles. lie was not likely to have beaten the winner, but would probably have been second if he had jumped the last hurdle correctly. Ho lost a lot of ground early and made it up to be almost in second place at the last jump. He nearly fell here, and finished fourth.

Clarion Call’s Treble. Clarion Call’s win in the Wanganui Steeplechase on Monday was the third time he has annexed this event. ITc won in 1937 when ridden by F. McHugh and in 1938 with A. Jenkins as his jockey, while this year he was ridden by W. 15. Pine. This treble by Clarion Call is not unique in this event, however. Another Awapuni horse. Riotous, trained by L. Knapp, lias also had three wins in this race, in 1934, 1935 and 1939. Good Performance by Amigo.

Even with an allowance for his apprentice rider Amigo was carrying about a stone more than anything else in the field in the Connolly Handicap at Wanganui, and was just beaten at the finish by Dark Eagle, who was in receipt of 311bs from him. Amigo was taken to the front, where he does his best work, hut Dark' Eagle, who was always handy to him, wore him down .over the last bit. It was a fine performance on the part of Amigo, however. Death of Haupongi. Haupongi. who is trained by J. Duggan, of Levin, and wan enlered in the Ladies’. Handicap at tho Napier , Park meeting, died on the course on Saturday. Earlier in the season ..Haupongi won at Waipukuruu and secured a double at Marton, but in previous seasons had not met with a greal deal of success. He was an eight-year-old bay gelding by Whirlwind —Roselovc. Duggan was also unfortunate in that he could riot secure a rider for Lady Chat, whom lie also took to Napier Park, in the Motco Hack Hurdles. However, he won the Ladies’ Handicap with Dr Defoe, ljis third horse at tho meeting.
