Mr and Mrs D. Lethbridge, of Marton, are staving with Mrs Lethbridge’s father, Mr F. S. Mcßae, of Napier Road.
Mrs A. Mortland and Miss Mavis Mortland, of Fcather6ton Street, are on holiday at Paraparaumu Beach. Mrs M. Pia6smore, of Hawke’s Bay, a former resident of Palmerston North, is visiting friends in the city. Mrs 0. T. J. Alpers, of Christchurch, sister of Mrs J. H. Whyte, of Rolleston Street, passed through last night on her way. to Auckland. She is leaving shortly for England to join her daughter, Mrs J. R. Dawson, whose husband Dr Dawson (son of Professor Dawson, of Dunedin) is now on military service.
A link with ,tlie pioneering days of Petone was severed with the death m Nelson, last Friday, of Mrs Catherine Amelia Mothes, wife of the late Mr Richard Mothes, a former Mayor of Petone. Mrs Mothes, who was in her 74th year, ;was born at Lower Hutt. In the old coaching days she and her husband conducted the Mariners’ Retreat Hotel in- Petone. Mrs Mothes is survived by five sons, three of whom are in the military forces, and two daughters. The monthly rehearsed reading of St. Andrew’s Drama Circle was he'd last evening, when a three act comedy was presented under the direction of Mr I. Campbell assisted by Mrs A. Allen. There was a large and appreciative attendance. The cast included; Mesdames T. L. Seator, It. L. C. Aitchison, K. Wilkinson, L. I. Plimmer, Misses A. L. Thompson, M. M. Harper, E. Newbold and Messrs G. L. Rae and B. B. Davidson. Mrs William Rolleston, widow of the last of the four superintendents of the Canterbury Province, died yesterday at the age of 95. She was for years one of the. most outstanding personalities among the women of New Zealand, and was noted for the contribution she made to the success of her husband’s career in public life. Born at Castleton, Dorset, in 1845, she arrived in New Zealand with her parents, Dr,and Mrs Joseph Brittain, by the ship William Hyde. She was then only three years old. Her father started in Christchurch a newspaper known as the Canterbury Standard, He was a member of the Provincial Council and was Provincial Secretary in Fitzgerald’s time, but he was defeated in the election of superintendent by Mr William Sefton Moor • house. Mrs" Rolleston married William Rolleston when she was 20 years old and during all his years of public service, when he cherished especially the cause of education and was an original member of the Canterbury College Council and the last superintendent of the province fighting three elections, his wife was Ins unfailing companion and wise adviser.
