WOODVILL E & DISTRICT
RUGBY FOOTBALL. Playing in the Bush Rugby Union’s senipr championship at the Recreation Ground on Saturday, Woodville beat Pahiatua by 17 -points to nil, Le J Bas was the outstanding AVoodville back. His pace, skilful handling | and . effective kicking made him a man to be watched, but it was noticeable that he frequently got himself and his side into trouble by banging on to the ball too long. Rossiter,- as usual, put in a tremendous amount of good work, while Burlace and'E. McNeil were also in good form. Eddy proved himself a versatile half-back and exploited the dive-pass to some purpose. The forwards, of course, saw more of the ball than the backs. The Woodville pack was a hard-working one on the whole, but the work of R. McNeil, Rosyth, Walker and Ansin calls for special* mention. The Pahiatua forwards, though lighter, were a good' match for Woodville, F. McKay and Pahu being outstanding. Woodville’s first try came well on in the first spell as the result of a smart piece of work bv Le Bas, who kicked through and followed up to charge down Noble’s return kick and win the race for the ball over the Pahiatua goal-line. Rossiter failed to convert. The Woodville backs and forwards combined to take play into the visitors’ twenty-five, where Rossiter picked up in a ruck in front of the post§ and charged over for a try only to lose an easy chance at conversion. In the second half Rossiter put in a determined run down the side-line from just inside half-way. Tackled a few yards from his objective, he handed on to Burlace, who kicked through for Ansin. to touch down in the corner. Walker failed to find the posts. A penalty against the visitors shortly afterwards gave Rossiter a chance at goal which he had no difficulty in turning to account. A spectacular run by R. McNeil in the last few minutes of the game produced Woodville’s final try. He dribbled right through the defence from a yard or two inside half-way and dived on to the ball in a handy position. Rossiter raised the flags. Pahiatua had the misfortune in the closing stages to lose two of their players (Smith and Levy), who retired with, slight injuries. The referee was Mr A. Harvey. ’ The third grade game between AA oodvilie and Athletic, played as a. curtainraiser to the senior match, was a keenly-fought contest, in which play was for the most part confined to the forwards. Athletic won by 6 points, to nil. Brady and I. A\ 7 atts scored tries. Mr Fgster refereed. SICK AND WOUNDED FUND.
