FIFTH COLUMN
ACTIVE IN FRANCE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph. —Copyright.) LONDON, June 2. A Paris correspondent says the Fifth Column is more active in France than is realised. Many have machine-guns. French ' soldiers have been shot in the back by civilians. A road sign was turned over the wrong way, sending mechanised columns along impracticable roads. Those arrested include a university professor and many girls in their teens. Two Sisters of Charity turned out to ho German soldiers. London reports state-, that Scotland Yard officers searched a German hospital in East London and examined the belongings of the staff, after which 29 of 30 sisters and nurses employed were taken for internment. The secretary (Mr Loeffler) wlm is a naturalised British subject, said: “All our sisters, though German, were anti-Hitler.” In consequence of action taken by r the American Ambassador in co-opera-tionwit li the British authorities, Tyler Kent, a clerk who has been dismissed from the employment of the American Government, has been detained N by order of the Home Secretaiy.
