Many organisations in the city and country have passed resolutions demanding the establishment of a National Government and a more vigorous war effort. The Victorian Premier (Mr A. A. Dunstan) is visiting Sydney. He he would like to see national all-party governments in all States, as well as the Commonwealth. Sub-branches of the Returned Soldiers’ and Sailors’ League have passed resolutions urging the organisation of the whole of the resources of the country and of man-power, the internment of all enemy aliens, conscription without exemption for home defence, and the introduction of a scheme for the protection of vulnerable points by members of the Returned Soldiers’ League. At Canberra the House of Representatives has passed Bills providing for the expenditure for the war and defence purposes of £77,740,000, of which £68,740,000 will be borrowed and the remaining £9,000,000 appropriated from the revenue. The Treasurer (Mr P. C. Spender) said the Bills covered commitments up to December 31, but

lie could give no guarantee that further appropriations would' not be necessary before that date. Mr Spender said that with these Bills the total authorisations by Parliament for war and special defence expenditure amounted to £153.000 000. The Premier (Mr R. G. Menzies) stated that the Government had made inquiries of the British Government to ascertain the possibilities of American ships being used to bring refugee children to Australia from the war-stricken European countries.
