AMERICA AND WAR.
CREDITS FOR DEMOCRACIES. ■ WASHINGTON, May 30. Senator McNutt, in a speech, said: “If by extending credits to the Democracies defeat for their cause may be averted the future welfare and safety of this country would justify it.” He asserted that it would be legitimate to buy some Allied possessions in the Western Hemisphere to prevent hostile Powers frem getting a foothold. The Allies are reported to have placed a 250,000,000 dollar order for pursuit and bomber 'planes in recent days, which is additional to 1,000,000,000 dollars alreadv spent. The latest available figures are that the Allies have bought 7700 ’planes since January, 1939, of which 2000 have been delivered. Legislation is being introduced authorising the training of members of the Civilian Conservation Corps in cooking, first-aid, road building, signalling and “other matters essential to military and naval activities.” Senator Byrnes said an endeavour would be made to earmark 25,000,000 to 50,000,000 dollars of the 975,000000 dollars relief bill for the building of defence projects.
