91ST BIRTHWAY.
MRS JAMES HANCOX. ■> Mrs James Hancox, a resident of the Kairanga district, recently celebrated her 91st birthday. Mrs Hancox was born on May l 17, 1849, in Birmingham, and came to New Zealand with her husband and two children in 1872. They landed in the South Island from the sailing ship. Babington alter a six months’ voyage. Alter six years residence in the South Island, Mr and Mrs Hancox, with their five children, shifted to AVeilington and thence to Otaki, where they remained for 2U years, Mr Hancox being engaged in .brickmaking and bricklaying. , From Otalci they went to Mangaweka and •thence to Piriaka, where they conducted a store and boardinghouse until Mr Hancox died, .in 1920, when Mrs Hancox came to live with her daughter, Mrs \A r . H. Davey, of Kairanga. , - ~ Although confined to her bed for the past 18 months with rheumatism, Mrs Hancox (“Nana”) keeps a lively interest in everyday life, and despite ner blindness delights in hemming pillowships and darning for her daughters. One son and three daughters are still living, and Mrs Hancox is able to claim 115 descendants in a 11—33 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
