EXCITING FINISHES.
TATTERSALL’S TWO WINS. AURORA’S STAR SURPRISES. Some exciting finishes were seen and the decisions of botli the Rangitira, Hurdles and the Manawatu Winter, Cup, the two main events of the day, were closely fought out. There were some surprise wins, and Ihe victory of Aurora’s Star in the Alanawotu Winter Cup was one. She was handicapped on the. minimum and was prominent all the way, beating the favourite, Titlewaiter, in a close finish after being capably handled by W. J. Mudford. Aurora’s Star was third at Olaki last Saturday but had not raced much since earlier in . the season, when she had three wins.' Tidewaiter and the third horse, Quadroon, both ran good races and should do better soon.
Harbour Bar surprised by a runaway victory in the Akitio Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase,' winning all the way. He had done no previous racing this season, and returned double figures. He jumped impressively, and more should be heard of him.
In the Rangitira Hurdles P. Jarvis, who rode Harbour Bar in the steeplechase, tried to win again with the same tactics on Hunting Lore, but after opening up a big gap ho was gradually, overhauled and beaten into third place on the post by two Hawke’s Bay horses, Blue Tiger and Soho. Both these horses have not been raced much this season.
Otaki form worked out well in two of the hack races and Military Maid and Young Charles, who both had easy wins last Saturday, again won yesterday, though not by such large margins. The performance of Young Charles was particularly impressive, as lie came from the back of the field and beat the others without much difficulty. Sleeveless carried off the open sprint without difficulty and gave G. R. Tattersail his second win of the day. He previously rode Military Maid and was the only jockey to have two successes. Similarly, Sleeveless completed a double for the Awapuni trainer J. J. Waller, who also owns ..ml trains Aurora's Star. lie was the only trainer with two successes. Lord Cavendish, nil outside fancy, ran well to be second in the sprint and the consistent Rakahanga was in third place, but nothing had much chance with the winner.
Colincainps surprised in the last race with an easy win. Counter, the favourite, and a very consistent performer of late, was second.
Under the control of the president (Mr To 11. Ccllinson), the secretary (Miss M. Buchanan) and committee the meeting was conducted very capably and the usual complete arrangements were made. Following arc details of the races additional to those which appeared in the first edition of the “Manawatu Standard’’ yesterday : THRILLING FINISH. • There was ari exciting finish to the Rangitira Hurdles when Hunting Lore, who tried to win all the. way was just caught, at the finish and beaten into third place by Blue Tiger and Soho Hunting Lore opened up a big lead at the 6tart, At the end of the first round Curie, in second place, was reducing the gap, with Aurora's Ixivc. Soho and Blue Tiger next. Hunting Lore led over the last fence, where Aurora's Love fell, and in a good finish Blue Tiger got up to win by a head from Soho. Then came Hunting I/ore, Curie and War Lap. The favourite, Charade, was last all the way and tailed right off AURORA’S LOVE. DESTROYED. Aurora’s Love broke a fetlock and had to he destroyed: EXCITING CUP RACE. Aurr a’s Star caused something of a surprise ‘by' winning the Manawatu Winter Cup in an exciting race. He fought- out the finish with the favourite, Tidewaiter, and won narrowly. Quadroon, Old Surrey. Aurora’s Star and Tidewaiter were prominent early. Old Surrey took over the lend fiom Brazil, Quadroon and Aurora’s Star, and at the turn Du Maurier ran to the . front. Aurora’s Star came from the middle to go into the. lead in the straight and just headed off Tidewaiter, with Quadroon and Colonel Bogey next, ahead of Du Maurier and C'lassfoim. YOUNG CHARLES WINS AGAIN. Young Charles and Titter, who were first, and second respectively at Oiaki, were similarly placed in the Mangawhala Handicap to-day. Young Charles did not win by such a large margin as previously, hut did not need the whip, while Titter was under a hard ride. Dnmnanway was the early leader from Renascor and Titter. With half a mile to go Young Charles moved up from the hack and ran into third place behind Titter and Renascor. This was the order to the straight, where Young Charles got up to boat Titter with no difficulty in the last few yards. Dunmamvay, Renascor, Phil, Fauvette and Ruatiti were next. GOOD WIN FOR SLEEVELESS. A strong favourite in Sleeveless scored a popular win in the Rongotea Handicap. She has been running consistently of late, and
had a comfortable victory after being actually last away. Screen Star was the pacemaker throughnut and was attended by Lord Cavendish. Rakahanga and Sleeveless moved up behind the leaders at the turn, hut when the straight was reached Screen Star and Lord Cavendish held on in front. Sleeveless then drew away and heat Lord Cavendish by a length. Rakahanga, (ltrce fourths further back, was at the head of Gold Ballad, Screen Star, Gobi Chase and Gay Chou. COLINCA-YH’S WINS.
Tlie sixth favourite, Colincanipe, surprised with an easy win in the Raukawa Handicap and paid more than double figures, the best dividend of the day. The winner was >cll placed all the way. and drew away to heat 'the favourite Counter, a ’consistent performer, by two lengths. Debrotts and Col incamps moved out first and opened up a gap of nearly two lengths on the field, in which Sir Musket, Last Acre, Indian Sun, and Counter were prominent. Moradabad also made a fast move up. Counter was, behind the two leaders turning into the straight-, but could get. nowhere near Colincainps.
