EX-BELGIAN PREMIER.
TO FIGHT FOR COLOUItS. Received May 16, 11.10 a.m. WASHINGTON, May 15. M- Paul Van Zeeland, a former Premier of Belgium, bade farewell to President Roosevelt to-day. He said he was going to Europe during the week. "I couldn't stand it any longer." lie said. "I am going back as quickly as possible to enlist." Bom in 1893, M. van Zeeland came into prominence in 1938, when he was entrusted by Britain and France with finding a eolation to world economic problems. Kc devised a plan involving the general stabilisation of world currencies, but it was never put into effect. In April, 1938, M. van Zeeland, as Premier, fought the lascist leader, M. Degrelle, in a spectacular byelection in Brussels. He won a crushing victory. In October, however, a financial scandal developed and the Fascists or Rexists seized on it to abuse M. van Zeeland. Finally, ho resigned in order to defend Ins honour. Before he entered politics he was lecturer in law at Louvam University _ and was also Vice-Governor of the National Bank of Belgium. More recently he has been living in the United States.
