HOCKEY.
MANAWATU ASSOCIATION. At a meeting of the executive committee of the Maiiawatu Hockey Association last evening, Mr L. Martin presided. . , The ’Varsity team was granted peimission to compete in the aimual University hockey tournament at WelliugThc 'Wellington Hockey Association wrote expressing appreciation of the long and faithful service rendered to hockey by Mr ML Fitzgerald, a former secretary, selector and _ vice-president of the Maiiawatu Association, who is now on military service m Egypt. Tlie New Zealand Hockey association advised that the question of taking up with the Government the matter of securing of hockey sticks for the schoolhoy teams in the Manawatu will come before the next meeting of the New Zealand Association. —Mr 11. A. Brace stated that 50 schoolboys’ hockey sticks had been received from Canterbuiy. Mr D. Wilton advised that, in an endeavour to encourage schoolboy hockey in the Manawatu, he had formed a special committee to deal with the matter At a meeting of this committee it was decided to communicate with the headmasters of all local schools requesting them to forward to him particulars of boys available to play hockey on Saturdays. Regarding tho request of the Ohakea Air Force team to play in the Manawatu Association’s competitions, the Feilding Association lorwnrded a resolution passed as tlieir last meeting stating that, owing to that association catering adequately for hockey in thendistrict, they could not grant the Ohakca Air Force, or any other club, permission to play out of their district as laid down hv .the parent body. The Feilding Association also notified that the question of women’s teams playing in the Manawatu would he discussed at the next meeting of the Feilding Association. Notification was received from the Wellington Association that they would be able to play a match against the Manawatu Association for the Cliffe Shield. • Permission to play in any tournaments on June 3 was granted to all clubs. It was decided to request the sole selector, Mr R. Hoare, to select and coach a Manawatu representative team |as soon as possible. A donation of £5 5s to the Red Cross and St. John Appeal Fund was made. tIn reply to an application by the Woodville Club for a Saturday at the end of the first round of the Manawatu competitions oil which to piny the Campbell Shield tourney. the meeting decided to offer June 3 as the day for that tourney. It was decided to arrange a women’s hockey practice match for next Saturday and to hold a meeting of those present on the grounds, to discuss the formation of a number oJL women's hockey teams. FIXTURES. The matches to bo placed on Saturday are: —Senior A: Phoenix v. Broadway, No. 1 ground, Hokowhitu, 3 p.tn. (Messrs \V. 11. Wilson and R. Irwin); ’Varsity v. United, at Massey College, 2.30 p.vi. (Messrs F. McLaciilan and D. Wilton); Woodville. a bye. Senior B: United y. High School, No. .1 ground, Ilokowhilu, 1.40 p.in. (Messrs D. Hoare and R. Hoare); Woodville v. Broadway, No. 3 ground, Ilokowhilu, 3 p.m. (Messrs B Palcnski and L. Rendlc); ’Varsity, a byo. Juniors: Broadway v. High School. No 3 ground, 1.40 p.m. (Messrs L. Winks and D. MeMurray) ; Phoenix v. United, No. 2 ground, 1.40 p.m. (Messrs W. Sutlon and J. McDonald).
