NORTHERN CLUB’S SOCIAL.

On Tuesday evening the members ol the Northern Club attended in strong force at the club pavilion for a social. A musical programme, including items by Messrs Alan Sundbo.ni, L. Wood, J. Brown, A. Campbell, F. Kirk, F. McLachlan, J. King, a community sing, and some illusions by Mr H. J King, comprised the first part, and then Mr A. E. Lynch, president of the club, made reference to the retirement of Mr George Lynch as the club's greenkcepcr. For over 11 years, he said, Mr Lynch had carried out M* duties in a most satisfactory manner, and although the size and number of the playing areas had increased during that time, Mr Lynch had continued to give of his best. Many complimentary references had been made at times to the state of the lawns by outsiders, and the croquet and bowling championships had often been completed on the club's greens. Mr T. E. Hodder, first president of the club, considered Mr G. Lynch to have been an excellent officer, and, as in most clubs, although members may not be wonderful bowlers, it was astounding how many of thain were experts in lawn management. (Laughter.) Despite this, Mr Lynch had carried on with his work and everyone realised the value of the services, he rendered. Mr J. C. Young, green superintendent, referred to the ability of Mr Lynch, his energy and good humour, and considered he had well earned all the good things said of him Mrs L. Wood spoke on behalf of tlife croquet ladies and presented Mrs Lynch with a bouquet. The president then handed Mr Lynch a cheque, and advised him that the club had conferred on him honorary membership of the bowling section. Musical honours followed, a specially written chorus being heartily given. Mr Lynch thanked members, and particularly the croquet ladies for their kindness to him and said that the years he had spent in the service of the club had been a pleasure to him. He looked forward to continuing his association for many years as a member.
