HIGHWAYS EXPENDITURE.

REDUCTION IN GRANTS. Advice that there would be a reduction in the grants made to county councils for main highways maintenance expenditure in the first half of the current financial year was received at the meeting, yesterday, of the Manawatu County Council. The circular stated: “At thie time of the year it is usual for monetary authorities to he issued hy the Main Highways Board authorising highways maintenance exnenditure for the first six- months of the financial year. These authorisations are normally based upon an amount equal to half of the previous year’s maintenance expenditure. However, in view of petrol restrictions the board anticipates that a reduction will result in the cost of highway maintenance and, under the circumstances, has decided to restrict maintenance authorisations for the first six months to half last year’s expenditure less 20 per cent.’’ The circular was referred to the engineer (Mr IT. V. Bond).
