WORK AMONG LEPERS
TREATMENT OF DISEASE. INTERVIEW WITH SECRETARY. Rev. F. A. Crawshaw, general secretary in Australia for the Mission to Lepers, and formerly secretary in New Zealand, is revisiting Palmerston North, where he was pastor of the Baptist Church from 192(3 to 1929. “I am paying a short visit to the main centres in an effort to raise funds to build a boys’ home at Naiiii, near Allahabad; it is estimated to cost £250,” said Mr Crawshaw in an interview with the “Manawatu Standard.”
Mr Crawshaw added that the mission was working in 20 different countries and had over 100 stations. In the homes there were over 18,000 lepers receiving attention. “One of the hardest things the missionaries have to do is to refuse admission to the homes,” said Mr Crawshaw. “Many of the homes are full and there is no room to accommodate the new cases. Daily, large numbers of people are turned away owing to this. “The cases are being treated _ with the now treatment —an injection of chaulmoogra oil —which is the most effective method yet found to combat the disease. Provided the disease is found in its early stages, there is a possibility that ’ the treatment will prove successful, but if it is in its advanced stages then the case is just about hopeless,” said Mr Crawshaw. “For those who are not found early the only thing that can be done is to give them plenty of exercise and keep them clean. Of last year’s total of 12.000 patients, 9000 improved, and 1500 were discharged as symptom-free and with no trace of the disease. In consequence of the large number being cured many now come from the remote places seeking admission to the leper station,” concluded Mr Crawshaw. LANTERN LECTURE. A lantern lecture was given hy Mr Crawshaw, on Monday, in the Baptist Church, Rev. J. C. Macky presiding. Mr Macky extended a welcome to Mr Crawshaw on behalf of the large audience. The visitor showed 100 coloured slides depicting the work and the life of those connected with the Mission to Lepers.
