SICK AND WOUNDED
BIG APPEAL OPENS. CITY’S SPLENDID START. The Sick, Wounded and Distress Appeal under'the direction of the Joint Council of the Red Cross Society and St. John Ambulance Association, aiming at the raising of £250,000 throughout the Dominion, was officially launched yesterday, and so successful has the organisation of the Palmerston North and district committee’s share in the effort been that already £IOOO has been listed here. The response is described by the local committee' as immediate, impressive and inspiring. The noble purpose for which the appeal is being made produced a magnificent response, ten contributors each giving £IOO. This fine load should move every citizen to give to the utmost, the committee states. Indeed, such giving will be imperative, for the allocation to Palmerston North and the Kairanga County is £6OOO. This substantial figure is a challenge to the generosity and patrioti'rrf of the citizens, but the inspiring exariiple of the few contributors mentioned below launches the scheme boldly and grandly and augurs well for its success. The initial donation is as follows. — £
R. Tanner ... 100 J. Linklater 100. L. B. Wall ... ... ... ... ••• 100 Voss Bros 100 A. Aiken ... ... ... ••• ••• 100 Barraud and Abraham, Ltd. ... 100 Collinson and Cunninghame, Ltd. 100 C. M. Ross Co., Ltd. ... ... 100 Hodder and Tolley, Ltd 100 City Council .... ... 100
. £IOOO KAIRANGA COUNTY CANVASS. The settlers of the Kairanga County, judging by the magnificent lead given by several of their prominent residents, intend to step up fully to their share of the £6OOO allotted to Palmerston North city and the county. In the recent Fighting Forces Appeal Feilding district did amazingly well; but somehow an organised opportunity was not given the Kairanga to do its share. No such omission will take place with the Sick and Wounded Appeal. The county has been divided into 20 blocks, and a meeting of all those willing to assist in the canvass will be held in the Kairanga County Council board room Rangitikei Street,'to-morrow, at 2.30 p.m.
