KIA TOA BEAT UNIVERSITY.
A MERITED VICTORY. - ’ Holding a territorial advantage over the greater part of the game, Kia Toa beat University by 13 points to 6. The teams were : Kia Toa. —Carr, Stenberg, Marshall, Leader. Thomas, Quinn. Parris, Grindrod, Barnao, Speedy, Whyte, Williams, Coombe, Thurston, G. Wasley. University.—Herbert, Bowler, Cookson, Tuataki, Duncan, Land, Smith, Seeley, Webster, McLaren, Craven, Bowles, Green, Wallace, Gray. Up aml down play opened the match, Land and Herbert then being seen in a bright dash, but an infringement stopped it. Kia Toa returned the thrust, Marshall opening up the movement with a cut-in and a “dummy.” Leader went on to score with a determined run and Carr converted the try. Kia Toa nearly scored again in following up, and Universitv were penalised for putting the ball in the scrum, incorrectly. Carr kicked the goal. Just prior to half-time McLaren made up a considerable amount of ground to pave the way for a try bv Gray. McLaren missed a relatively easy kick.
: In the second half play hovered in Kia Toa territory until McLaren put over a penalty kick, bringing University within two points of the leaders. Stenberg was unlucky in not scoring after racing University men to attempt to touch down. University had their turn and only a twenty-five dropout saved the defenders. Again play went to the University line and Wasley picked up to use his weight in going round a scrum close in and score. Carr converted for the final score to read : Kia Toa 13. University C. The referee was Mi’ A. Ward.
