HOCKEY
MANAWATU ASSOCIATION. The, Manawatu Hockey Association’s championship matches were continued on Saturday in ideal weather conditions, but as on the previous Saturday, the ground at Hokowhitu was very soft and tended to cut up easily. Play on the whole was not up to the standard of the previous week’s, it being more of a ragged nature, particularly amongst the forwards. There was only one game in the senior A division at Palmerston North which was Avon by a decisive margin. The other senior A match was played at Woodville, as was also a senior B fixture. THE SCORE BOARD. SENIOR A. Broadway 6 v. ’Varsity 2 Woodville 5 v. Phoenix 1. - SENIOR It United 4 v. Woodville 2. JUNIOR. Phoenix 3 v. High School 0. Broadway won by default from United SENIOR B United 4v. Woodville 2. SENIOR A. Owing to the term vacation, ’Varsity were unable to field their strongest team in their match -against Broadway, and consequently were not able to resist the determined attacks of their opponents. Broadway showed good attacking combination occasionally in the lust half, but their play wins mostly ,of a ragged nature. D O’Brien, playing on the left wing, notched a brilliant goal by turning derensive play into attack and following through on the ball. J. Beale scored two goals also for Broadway by following through hard. Other scorers were A. Hodgson (2) and D. Burrows. For ’Varsity. H. G. HopeAvell and It. Gill scored good goals The umpires were Messrs W. H. Wilson and R. Hoare. Hockey of an encouragingly, high standard Avas played in lino weather and on a sodden field at the Recreation Ground, Woodville. Woodville defeated Phoenix tp the tune of 5 goals to one. Though.the state of the playing area Avas such as to slow up ■the game considerably, both sides put plenty of energy into tli.er Avork.' In Stroud, VoAveil. Orme, Christensen and Beale Woodville had a strong front-line attacking combination to which much of their success Avas due, while Harris, in goal, effected many timely saves. First blood AA'ent to Phoenix-as the result of a fonyard rush. Woodville quickly equalised, Strand smashing home a hot shot folloAving vigorous work in the circle. Soon afterAvarrls Yoavcll sent in a nicely-placed centre for Orme to net. with a drive that had the goalie beaten all the -way: Phoenix attacked hard immediately on resuming after half-time, but Burlace, Avitli a great run doAvn the sideline, opened, the way for a goal by. Stroud. The same player shortly aftenvards took a centre from Orme and again found the net. Stroud went within an ace ol scoring Ids fourth goal in the clos.iig stages, but the Phoenix goalie cleared to Beale, Avho centred smartly, V cnveJl making no mistake Avitli a shot from close range. The referees Avere Messrs D. Wilton and R. Seeker. SENIOR B. The United senior B team proved too good for Woodville, beating them by 4 goals- to 2} Woodville opened the 'scoring Avith a goal by Forbes, following a brilliant solo run. Jester scored two goals for United, making the half-time score 2—l in favour of the A’isitors. Tester again netted lor United soon after the resumption. Hotwork in United’s circle saAv Hardy break through- and -score.;for > Woodville.Accurate passing among .. .the visiting forwards tfas responsible for the last goal of the match secured by Hart. Messrs D. Wilton and R Christensen, umpired. JUNIOR. In the junior division Phoenix were, not hard pressed to beat High School, Avho had only the skeleton ot their usual team owing to the term holidays. Goals for Phoenix Avere scored by Kellington (2), and I airly. The umpires were Messrs L. Winks and W. Sutton.
