BLIND CHAMOIS
TOLL IN WESTLAND. Per Press Association. i NELSON, May 0. A very large numlier of chamois in an extensive area of the Southern Alps have been affected by permanent, blindness, according to Nelson spoilsmen - They, noticed it three years ago and confirmed it during a recent shooting expedition, when they saw carcases of chamois which had died lor no other reason than blindness, limy even caught some animals by hand. Others were seen in a dying condition, with no chance of recovery 01 the many chamois seen by the party only two‘had their eyesight unimpaired. Chamois have now established themselves in the Travers Valley at the ] iea d of Lake Rotoiti, where they have been shot by deer cullers and also at the head of the D’Urville River, at the head of Lake Rotoroa. feo far no blind animals have been noticed in the areas in Nelson Province.
