LAND DRAINAGE.

AIAKERUA BOARD. A meeting of the Alakerua Drainage Board was held yesterday, 1 Trustee it. Seifert presiding. The other members present were Trustees G. Lassen, H. Sames, H. Alexander, G. T. W. Clifford, J. D. Aitchison and W. Jackson.

Tlie action of the overseer (Mr P. V. Tucker) in letting two drain ■ contracts was confirmed. A deputation headed by Mr A. Seifert waited on the board in reference to the construction of the boundary drain. It was stated that the deputation had never asked for the erection of a floodgate on tho drain. The chairman said that the hoard had no intention of erecting a floodgate without certain conditions. After the deputation had retired it was decided to abide by the previous resolution that the board erect the floodgate subject to certain conditions. In reference to the erection of stopbanks the following resolution was carried on Trustee Jackson’s motion: “That this board advises the Alana-watu-Oroua River Board of the danger of tlie Alanawatu River overflowing the banks in this board’s lower area and asks that steps be taken by the Manawatu-Orouu Board to give relief by the removal of unauthorised hanks further hack from the river, or that adequate spillways be erected, it being considered also that unauthorised hanking is the cause of the danger.” The financial statement presented by the clerk (Air N. I. Nielsen) showed that the board had a credit balance of £2239 Os 4d at the bank, compared with £1628 16s lOd at the corresponding date last year and £265 13s lid at the Alay meeting in 1938. The total arrears of rates for 1939-40 were £605 14s 9d, and the total of arrears since 1933-34 was £IS6O 4s sd.

The report of the overseer (Air P. Y. Tucker) stated that work had been confined to the cleaning of drains.
