PAHIATUA
PERSONAL. Mrs T. Rutherford, of Pahiatua, is visiting Auckland. COUNTY RATES. At the meeting of the Pahiatua County Council, over which Cr A. \V. Bisset presided, a decision was made to increase the rates by at least one-eighth of a penny in the pound, when the estimates were being discussed. The total extra amount required was estimated at £644, or equivalent to one-eighth of a penny in the £ on the total late. Factors making for an increased rate pointed out by the clerk and councillors included the drop in. credit during the past financial year of £2IOO. the increase in fixed charges due to the maturing leans, the decrease of 20 per cent, in the Main Highways Beard maintenance allowance, and rises in benzine and labour costs. 'J'he following motion was passed:— “That the overseer and county clerk be instructed to draw up estimates providing for an increase of l-25th of a penny in the £ in the general rate, plus the additional fixed charges to be mot.” The Main Highways Board advised that, owing to petrol restrictions and the consequent decrease in traffic, it was proposed to issue monetary authority fer road maintenance on a basis of 20 per cent, less than the previous year. The overseer pointed out that although expenditure on maintenance cf read surfaces could not be reduced, money might be saved by reducing on such works as improvements. The Masterton County Council forwarded a schedule cf the now heavy traffic regulations. Mr Hutton commented that licenses classed A to D were reduced 50 per cent., a concession for genuine farmers and market gardeners. Advice was received from the Main Highways Board that the widening of the Makuri Gorge from Gorge End bridge to near Tylce’s Ford would be completed by the end of this month. The men would then be placed elsewhere, and the county was asked to take over the maintenance of the section. The department proposed to improve a bad corner near the Gorge End bridge. The work was already begun, but before it proceeded any further an expression of the council’s opinion was desired. The chairman commented that the department had been very liberal, doing a good deal of work beyond the contract, and it was decided to agree to the work being done, and to send a letter of appreciation for the extra work.
