WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) APITI, May 10. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday. Motions of sympathy were passed with the Digby family and Mrs N. J. Viles in their recent bereavements. Final details were discussed for the dance. The next lot of soldiers’ parcels are to be ready for the June meeting, which will be held at the Community Centre, Feilding. A contribution was voted to the Oroua Federation funds. The ladies of Makerua Road were responsible for the social arrangements, and they presented a Scottish afternoon. Every member was given a buttonhole of Royal Stuart tartan, and Scottish stories, songs and jokes passed the time pleasantly. Competition results were: Shortbread. Mrs Harland 1, M rs O’Hagan 2, Miss Malone 3; Scottish thistle, Mrs R. V.. - Stewart 1 and 2, Mrs D. McNicol 3; most interesting object of Scottish origin, Mrs Stanley (a pair of silver shuffers which belonged to Thomas Carlyle), Mrs W. Duncan 2, Mrs R. V. Stewart 3; rugs made by the girls of the District High School, Annie Benseman 1, Muriel Prujean 2, Ray Jensen 3. The competition judges were Mrs Jacob, senr., Mrs M. Jacob and Miss D. Bridgman. NOTES. Competitions for the W.D.F.U. meeting are:—Bloom, vase of berries (for effect) and six pikelets. Mr and Mrs W. J. Osborne arc visiting relatives in Dargaville. Mr and Mrs B. Watersnn are on holiday in Taranaki. Mr and Mrs C. Spence are spending a holiday at Foxton Beach. Miss C. Stanley is visiting friends in Palmerston North. Mr E. S. Payton, secretary of the local Young Farmers’ Club, is a member of the party touring the South Island at present. The school committee met recently, Mr 11. Wildboro presiding. Also present were: Messrs S. Lequesne, D. McNicol, W. Hogan (secretary) and S. F. Morris (head teacher). Mr J. D. . ICilgour is away. Mr McPherson offered wood for the school, subject to the committee making their own arrangements regarding cutting and removal. The offer was gratefully accepted. Mr McNicol, as a delegate, reported on a meeting he had attended in Kimbolton in connection with school football and basketball. It was decided to subsidise the children’s fares at the rate of sixpence per child when they go away to play matches. The secretory is to make further enquiries about insurance. A very happy evening was spent when the Presbyterian Bible class held a social to which they invited members of the Methodist Bible class. Mr W. Jensen, as leader of the Bible class, was in charge, and games and competitions were enjoyed. Miss Ruth Nix gave an elocutionary item, and two charades were acted. Mr C. Mapson, on behalf of the guests, thanked the Presbyterian Bible class members for their invitation. Competitions were won by Misses E. Jensen, A. Ilodson and M. Mclntyre.
