DUNEDIN SERVICE.
CONSIDERABLE RESTRICTION. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Mav 9. When the Christchurch-Jnvercargill express train left this morning, it was not expected to get beyond Duuedin. Train control officers received advice last night that there is two feet of water over the line at. Allatiton (Taieri) and heavy rain is continuing. Up till midday the department had not been able to get into telephonic communication with Dunedin owing to a break in the line near Orari. OTAGO’S PLIGHT. A Dunedin telegram states that train services to the south are still suspended and it is feared that when the waters subside heavy scouring will further delay a resumption. The branch lines in the south are all impassable. There are heavy stock losses both in the Taieri and Middlemarch areas, the river in the latter district being at the highest level in half a century. " Waitahuna reports that the stream there is back to normal with under two feet of water on the road. Mails for Invercargill have left by lorry, which will travel via Taieri Mouth. Mails from Outram were conveyed yesterday across the flooded plain in a boat. . At Waipori 13 inches of ram fell m four days, as against only five inches in the city of Dunedin. Henley experienced the worst flood in its historv. All the houses at the road level and an hotel were evacuated during the night The trouble was aggravated by failure of the electric light. ’.' ■ :
