MIDLAND LINE.

BLOCKED BY SLIPS. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, May 9. Big slips on the Midland Line between Staircase and Avoea, this morning, have made rail communication between Christchurch and the West Coast impossible to-day. The department does not expect to have the line cleared until late to-night. An express passenger train was despatched from Christchurch at 11 o’clock, an hour later than U6ual, but it travelled only as far as Springfield. The extent of the slips on the line is so great that the transhipment of passengers is considered impracticable. The train from Greymouth this morning was scheduled only to run to Arthur’6 Pass.
