Lieutenant Harvey, New Zealand Permanent Staff, of the 28th Maori Battalion, has been promoted to the rank of captain. Mr Otto D. Tolisclms, the Berlin correspondent of the New York Times, lias been awarded the 500-dollar Pulitzer Prize in journalism “for distinguished service as a war correspondent,” states a New York cablegram. At the meeting of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce, last evening, Mr J. A. Nash was reappointed the chamber’s representative on the Manawatu District Committee of the New Zealand Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs. Pilot-Officer E. AV. Barnett, of Halcombe, who is stationed at New Plymouth, was welcomed at a meeting of the Manawatu and AA’est Coast A. and P. Association to-day, pleasure being expressed that lio was able to take his seat as vice-president again after his recent illness. Mr E. St. Haydon. a. new member of the committee, and Messrs AA 7 . D. Carson (AVanganui); H. J. Lancaster (Levin) and J. J. Stevenson (Wellington, and formerly of Palmerston North), who have been appointed district members, were welcomed at a meeting of the committee of the Manawatu and AVest Coast A. and P. Association to-day. Mr T. C. Brash, formerly secretary of the Dairy Produce Board, who has now retired, was a visitor this morning to the dairy factory managers’ gathering being held at Massey College. Mr Brash, who is about to visit Taranaki in company with Mr J. Tveast, a director of the Kennington Dairy Factory, Southland, was able to renew many acquaintanceships at the conference.

Lieutenant-Colonel G. Lyon, M.C., E.D., officer commanding the 2nd Artillery Brigade, accompanied by Major H. M. Muscroft-Taylor, District- Artillery Officer, and Lieutenant H. C. F. Petersen, R.N.Z.A., who visited Palmerston North last evening to conduct the annual inspection of the Bth Field Battery, New Zealand Artillery, left this morning for Napier, where they will inspect the Napier unit to-night. Major and Mrs Wilfred Searle, who were formerly stationed at Palmerston North and liave been in charge of Salvation Army work in Napier during the last two years, have received notice of their transfer, to dake effect this week. Major Searle has been appointed to take up military work in the Wellington district and will enter Fort Dorset to-morrow with the rank of chaplain-major. Major and Mrs Martin Brown, of Feilding, will take charge oi thci Salvation Army work in .Napier.- , ■ .

Visitors to the dairy factory managers’ week, now being held at the Dairy-Research Institut., Massey College, include Mr J. R. McDonald (Cheltenham), president of the New Zealand Dairy factory Managers’ Association. and the following members of the Dairy Division’s staff: Messrs C. Stevenson '(cheese-making superintendent), J. H. Earle (cheese-making instructor in the Waikato), H. Petch (butter-making instructor in the Waikato), J. J. Walker (cheese-making instructor m the Manawatu-Hawke’s Bay district), E. Melton (buttermaking instructor in the same area), G. Purvis (butter-making instructor for the South Island) and AV. Crawford (cheese- making instructor in the North Taranaki area).
