The fire was soon suppressed, no damage resulting. FARMERS’ UNION. At the annual meeting of the Pahiatna Central branch of the Farmers’ Union held yesterday afternoon, Mr T. F. Anderson presided. Mr A. G. Dawson. Dominion organiser for the union was also present. The report presented by the chairman, stated: “Since, our last annual mooting the world has been plunged into war, and this lias brought its trail of problems and trials to all o,f us. As time goes on, so must these difficulties increase, but by extra effort and determination, wo can overcome them and carry on. The essential effort which is required' of us as farmers is to increase as much as we possibly can all our products, and if each one of us can produce just a little more, the collective effort should bo considerable. Wo havo many difficulties to contend with, and one of them is . the increasing difficulty of securing efficient farm labour. It is stated thitt already 4000 of those men have enlisted for active service, so that when the now season commences wo arc going to feel the shortage. I do not for one moment suggest that any man should be stopped from volunteering for service, because if a man hoars his country’s call and is patriotic enough to answer it, no one should deny him that privilege and honour.” The report also dealt with such subjects as the National Council of Primary Production, veterinary service, wages and labour, fertilisers, and the competitions held during . the year. “Our membership for the year just ended is 270, of whom 237 are financial members,” the report added. “Duo to various reasons a number are not finanIcial for this year, but by tho time Mr Dawson has completed his work, we hope to liavo them all signed up again, when it is reasonable to expect that our membership will be over 300. In the past this office received oidy 4s out of each subscription, and you can understand' ihat only by careful management and rigid economy were we able to run the branch. We hope that our share of the increased subscription may bo correspondingly increased.”
