THREE SELECTORS
RUGBY UNION DECISION, MANAWATU GAMES. By a decision made at the weekly meeting, last evenirtg, of the management committee of the Manawatu Rugby Union, the union’s senior representative teams will this season bo chosen by three selectors—Messrs W. Gleeson, E. Clevely and M. M. Cooper. A proposal that two selectors be appointed was lost. - Those present were - Messrs A. M. Ongley (chairman), J. Eagle, F. E. Sherwood, R. Gillespie, P. Skoglund, W. Schwarz, E. ' Clevely, ,H. Hands, J.> R. Hardie, ,H. R. Crawford, K. W. Eglinton and W. Gleeson. Leave of absence was granted Mr B. Palmer. When the subject of,' selectors was introduced, it was moved that Messrs Gleeson and Cooper be appointed, but an amendment 'that a committee of three bo the selectors was carried. Messrs Clevely, Gleespn, Cooper and Sherwood were nominated and the three first-named were elected in a ballot. The Eketahnna Football Club wrote seeking particulars of the number of teams n.nd the names of the players from the Woodville Club in the Manawatu competitions last season—A reply is to be sent that the information cannot bo supplied but that if the Bush Union requires it, it can be forwarded.
Mr C. C. H. Palmer (teacher at the Awahou North School) sought a donation of a football for the school. — Referred to tho Primary Schools Sports Association. Tho University Club advised that, owing to the vacation, its third grade team would be unable to play on May 11, IS, and 25 and June 1. The Red Cross Society and the Order of St. John in the Manawatu wrote asking for support for the Sick and Wounded Fund. —The chairman said one grant had already been made since the war opened. In addition to this second appeal, there would be others probably, and it might- be as well to set aside one good Saturday in the season, the takings on this day (at Palmerston North and at Feilding) to he devoted to patriotic purposes. These appeals could accumulate, suggested Mr Crawford, and when the takings for that day were received they could be apportioned accordingly. Mr' Crawford suggested that tfte high schools tournament would be an excellent fixture, the Moascar Cup being a big draw. It. was pointed out that there would be difficulties connected with this, and Mr Crawford then moved that May 25 be set down as the day, and this was decided on. The Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association wrote thanking the union , for granting permission for three Rugby games to be played at the Winter Show.—Received, and Mr Eglinton was appointed the delegate to the association’s ' football subcommittee. The Oroua Sub-Union advised that Mr Sherwood had been appointed its delegate on the management committee. Application was made for early fixtures, for the Wallace Cup games. The sub-union had not yet received its grant for primary school football for last season. —It was decided to suggest that the Wallace Cup match be played on June 13. A grant of £5 is to be made to the sub-union for school football. Mr Cyril King’, E,R.C-.5., ./wrote stating that,’ for private reasons, he was' unable to act as a. Rugby Union doctor this season.-—lt" was decided to write to Mr King expressing regret at his decision, and appreciation of his past services... Mr Skoglund said Mr King had given generous and considerate service to school football. ; As the outcome of a request received at last week’s meeting, it was decided to grant £5 to the Feilding Agricultural High School for the -use of the' school grounds last year. f Mr Hands, as a delegate /to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union, reported on the fixtures made for representative matches (already published) and these were endorsed. He stated that the Wellington Union was to decide last evening whether it could fulfil a match at Palmerston North on June 3. the expenses of the visiting team to be paid by the Manawatu Union.
