STEAMER OVERTURNS

WANGANUI RIVER TRAGEDY. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, May 7. Advice was receivd in Wanganui late to-night that the river steamer Oh'ura overturned in a rapid four miles above Pipiriki late bn Monday afternoon. 'J’he cargo of cattle was thrown into the river, and it is feared that the engineer (Mr 11. Gray) and the deckhands (Messrs G. Ropata and Te Hori) were drowned. All three were married,. Ropata having a family of eight children and Te Hori, who was a returned soldier, a small family. Little was known of the disaster till a steamer went upriver from Pipiriki this morning and found the Ohura upside down, with dead cattle floating downstream. The captain, Mr Andrew Anderson, and a deckhand, his nephew, managed to escape ashore.
