The Associated Press correspondent in the Stenk-jaer region v sayf*. ‘.‘Thousands of starving refugees; 1 who returned to the Namsos area (in Southern Norway) after the Allied evacuation hungrily gorged the Allies abandoned food supplies and carried off huge quantities.’’ .. . f . . ... The correspondent says that, the Norwegian regional commander (Colonel Obgetz) showed him letters received on the morning of Alay.l from Major-General De AVnut (Comma nder-in-Chief of the British Forces in Norway) and the French Commander (General Audet), in which they expressed regret at the Allies’ withdrawal and offered him the abandoned war material. Major-General de . AViart added:, “Our own hope is that we may - -re-? turn to help you bring the campaign, to a successful conclusion.” Colonel Obgetz said the letters were received as the last of the Allied transports were leaving Andalsnes. The correspondent adds that the British warships fired parting salvoes at the abandoned equipment, destroying a large quantity. . • A German High Command communique says that German. troops, marching from Stenkjaer northwards, are mopping up -the Andalsnes area. The communique enlarges the previous fantastic claims of British losses and says that German destroyers have sunk 23 Allied-, submarines a „d 2,300,000 tons of Allied shipping since the outbreak of the war.
