TRAFFIC REGULATIONS.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —I have heard visitors to Palmerston North remark on numerous occasions that the rules of the road are more often broken than observed in our fair city, and that Palmerston North’s reputation in this respect is widely known. Speaking as a motorist, I am sorry to say that, judging from my experience,- it does not belie that imputation. You have only to drive through Broadway, once or twice, to get a few thrills, and probably a dent or two. Motorists back out from the kerb, suddenly stop or turn without giving any of the warning signs whatsoever. It is a wonder to me that there are not more accidents. If you want to see some examples of bad driving, take a seat in the Square opposite tlie Kosy Theatre for a short while. The way some motorists tear round the turns in and out of Broadway in that short stretch between it and the Post Office is scandalous. The speed of some vehicles, and noticeably some of the municipal buses, is far too fast and is a source of danger to pedestrians and other users of the road. 1 think it is about time the traffic authorities made some effective effort to put a stop to these dangerous practices.—l am. etc., OBSERVER. Palmerston North, 6-5-40.
