CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
BOBBY CALF TRADE. DISCUSSION IN COMMITTEE. The Feilding Chamber of Commerce met last- evening, Mr A. C. Buist presiding over a good attendance. Aspects of the bobby calf trade were discussed in committee, and a sub-com-mittee set up to investigate and report at the next meeting. Later in the meeting, the chairman referred to correspondence from various sources concerning the trade, and in regard to a letter from the Feilding branch of the S.P.C.A. the speaker said that the chamber could not take sides in a trade dispute, but pointed out that individually members would be in sympathy with the efforts of the S.P.C.A. to improve conditions and shorten the delay in slaughtering calves. It was patent to all that it was desirable that as many as possible of thn calves from the Feilding district should he killed at Feilding. The chamber could not, however, interfere with arrangements made by farmers in the selling of their calves. If there was a delay in the slaughtering of calves beyond the specified time as set down in the regulations (24 hours), the S.P.C.A. inspector should take action. The meeting approved of the action of the committee in setting up a subcommittee.
Mr Craighead was elected a member of the chamber. NEW SHUNTING YARDS.
The chairman referred to the steps taken by the committee set up to discuss the new shunting yards with the Railway Department. It was stated that the district railway engineer had given an assurance that the new yards would prove beneficial to users of tho Kimbolton Road level crossing Mr J. S. Tingey hoped the engineer’s assurance would prove to be correct.
Other aspects of the discussion with the district engineer were covered by Mr H. J. Dewe. Mr R. G. Croudis, stationmaster, explained the system in use in regard to the ringing of the warning bells. Concerning the fact that the bells frequently rang when no train was approaching, Mr Croudis explained that in the station office there is a “buzzer” which indicated to the officials that the bells were ringing. If the batter}' operating the buzzer ran down the instrument did not function, and that would account for the bells continuing to ring longer than was necessary.
It was decided to send a letter congratulating Hon. P. Eraser upon his appointment as Prime Minister.
